Haiti's interim goverment said at the weekend that it will be ready to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on February 7 with a possible run-off poll on March 19.
This follows last Friday's call by an emergency session of the UN Security Council for elections to be held by February 7.
The elections should have taken place on Sunday. Haiti's Electoral Council postponed that date citing logistical problems and continuing violence.
The Sunday announcement of the new election date came a day after the death of the Brazilian Commander of the UN forces in Haiti, Lieutenant-General Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar.
A team of UN and Brazilian police and military officials are investigating the death. Bacellar was found Saturday with a gunshot wound to his head on the balcony of his hotel room.
